Next Meeting

Tuesday 3 March 2026 Nicholas Henderson. How to ‘read’ the English Country Church

The Reverend Dr. Nicholas Henderson will tell us “How to Read an English Country Church”

The passage of time, movements, cultures and peoples affect the architecture and art forms evident in many of our older English country churches. From the pre-Christian era, through the arrival of the Romans and onward to the Sixteenth Century and the Tudors, simple indicators are given how to identify churches with Roman and Saxon origins. Romanesque and Gothic architecture that followed the invasion of the Normans is also explained.
